A photograph of a leader (or ‘medium’) assisted séance, probably in the late 1890s. A ‘séance‘ is a meeting at which people attempt to make contact with the dead. In the Western world, Spiritualism grew to be quite popular, especially in English-speaking countries (1840s-1920s), mostly drawn from the middle and upper classes.
